It’s peak holiday season right now. You may have noticed, by the way half your emails bounce back marked “out of office — annual leave — ner ner ner”. If you’re stuck at home, though, don’t despair: the best holiday month is yet to come. September is still summer in the Med, but temperatures are more bearable, beaches less crowded and prices a whole lot lower. If you’re not bound by the school holidays, it’s far and away the best time to go — and there are still some great trips left. Here’s our pick of the September escapes — with how much you’ll save on the August price.

As you sip a sundowner in your private tropical garden at the DDG Retreat, you can watch the lights come on in Africa. The view across the Strait of Gibraltar never ceases to amaze and nor does this extraordinary bolthole, on a ridge above the pueblo blanco of Casares. There are seven exquisitely furnished casitas, each with its own kitchen and set in a shady garden with hammocks, sunbeds and a plunge pool. If you do venture out, you’ll find a hillside spa and a pool with a well-stocked honesty bar. After sundowners, it’s a 10-minute taxi ride to dinner at the superb Venta Victoria, which has been feeding locals since 1946.
